‘A space for me’: North Preston duo starts fitness group for Black women

Shanea Sparks and Lakara Whynder wanted to see a house in which Black gals could truly feel at ease functioning out, and see by themselves reflected in the space — so they developed just one. 

In March, Sparks and Whynder started out a team known as Black Woman Exercise to fill a gap they have discovered in the Halifax area.

When they held their 2nd course, attendance numbers grew. Gabrielle Grant, from East Preston, went to both the classes and programs to keep coming.

“If I’m all over people today that glance like me and women of all ages that help me and there is certainly … a assistance program in it, I really feel welcome to appear,” Grant said. “I really feel like there’s a room for me.”

She stated the greatest part was the workout wasn’t also really serious, and absolutely everyone was there to have a superior time.

Whynder and Sparks reported the objectives of the group mirror their individual lifelong health journeys. Two several years in the past, Whynder was element of the profitable team of a local “greatest loser” body weight-decline competitors. She reported it taught her she desires accountability.

She said hunting at the space and looking at a team of Black females spinning alongside one another made her truly feel “blessed and grateful.”
